Lake Mead is the largest man-made reservoir in the US and the 16th largest in the world. It was created when Hoover Dam was constructed along the Colorado River. It is one of the most popular outdoor attractions in the US, attracting over seven million visitors a year and offering year-round activities.
All types of water activities can be enjoyed at Lake Mead: swimming, boating, sailing, kayaking, jet-skiing and fishing. These activities need to be booked ahead, especially during Spring Break and the busy summer months. There are also non-water based activities that visitors can enjoy, including hiking, cycling and walking. Staying at Lake Mead is also an option. Visitors can camp or stay in one of the lodges in the national park. However, rooms at the lodges are limited and booking ahead is a must.
With over 820 miles of shoreline, Lake Mead is huge so it is even possible to avoid the crowds during the busiest summer months. However, getting here early is a must.
